Shown from above as the capital of Georgia, this panorama captures Atlanta at a time when the city held that title, which it gained in 1868 when the seat of government moved there from Milledgeville. Union forces under Sherman had burned much of the town in 1864, so views like this one, made in the years after the Civil War, record a city rebuilding quickly around its rail lines and commercial blocks. Bird's-eye views of the period were drawn in oblique perspective, trading strict accuracy for a sweeping look at streets and rooftops, so the margins and street names reward a close look.
