Drawn from a high vantage point, this 1856 map presents Washington as a single sweeping panorama rather than a flat street plan. The lithographic view was produced by E. Sachse & Co., a Philadelphia firm known for bird's-eye city views in the mid-1800s. It captures a capital still taking shape, when the Washington Monument stood unfinished and the Capitol was being enlarged. Views like this were popular with residents and visitors who wanted to see how the planned city sat within its landscape.
