Lebanon, Pennsylvania, in 1918 was a county seat in the Lebanon Valley, shaped by iron, rail, and tobacco. Its economy leaned on the iron ore and furnace works of the surrounding county, on rail lines that moved freight and passengers east and west, and on cigar making, which employed many local workers. The nation's entry into the First World War that year brought Liberty Loan bond drives, scrap and food conservation campaigns, and families watching for word from men in uniform. In the autumn, the influenza epidemic reached Lebanon as it did many Pennsylvania towns, forcing schools, churches, and public gatherings to close for a time. Residents of the period would have known their town first as a place of workers, rail, and wartime sacrifice.
