Officers of the 13th New York Cavalry gathered at Prospect Hill, Virginia, near Washington, in July 1865, a few months after Lee's surrender at Appomattox. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, worked in the wet collodion process, coating glass plates with light-sensitive chemicals and exposing them before they dried. Portraits of regimental officers like these were often made as volunteer units prepared to muster out, and they preserve the faces of the men who led cavalry through the war's last campaigns. Woodbury died in 1866, and his glass negative survives in the Library of Congress's Civil War collection.
