Theodore Roosevelt Jr., the eldest son of the president, is identified here from caption cards kept by the Bain News Service, a New York agency whose glass negatives document much of the city's news and public life in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so the occasion is uncertain, but Roosevelt's career supplies useful context: he served with the army in France during World War I, later governed Puerto Rico and the Philippines, and worked as assistant secretary of the Navy. Bain's glass plates remain a valuable record of the people and events of that era.
