Washington in 1909 was a federal city of roughly 300,000 people, where the Capitol, the White House, and the department buildings set the rhythm of daily work. Union Station, opened in 1907 north of the Capitol, gave railway travelers a grand Beaux-Arts hall that many residents saw as proof the capital was finally catching up with its monuments. Shoppers and farmers still crowded Center Market on Seventh Street, where stalls sold produce and meat from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia countryside. Along the Anacostia River, the Navy Yard built and repaired ships and guns for the fleet, while Rock Creek Park, set aside in 1890, offered wooded ravines close to town.
