The Grant Memorial stands at the foot of the Capitol grounds, where its bronze equestrian group of Ulysses S. Grant faces the Capitol across a broad plaza. Sculptor Henry Merwin Shrady worked on the monument for years, and it was dedicated in 1922, well after Grant's death in 1885. The National Photo Company made this image on glass between about 1910 and 1935, a period when the company documented the capital's monuments and streetscapes for sale to visitors. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes on the negative, which come from the natural breakdown of its original coatings.
