Stockton, California, in 1909 was a river port and farm-trade city in the San Joaquin Valley, shipping grain, wine grapes, fruit, and wool through its channel of the San Joaquin River, which allowed oceangoing vessels to reach the city from San Francisco Bay. Railroads, including the Southern Pacific lines that served the valley, tied its warehouses and packing sheds to markets far beyond the delta. The city was also home to a large immigrant community, including Portuguese, Italian, Chinese, and Japanese residents, many of whom worked in agriculture and the canneries and mills along the waterfront. Its downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods reflected a town that depended on the seasons of the harvest and the steady traffic of freight on the river.
