Indianapolis in 1918 was a rail and manufacturing city in the middle of the United States, with factories making automobiles, engines, and machinery alongside its long-standing meatpacking and railroad trade. The United States had entered the First World War the year before, and the city's streets filled with recruiting drives, Liberty Loan rallies, and troop send-offs that drew crowds to the downtown blocks around Monument Circle and the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. This parade of uniformed men reflects that wartime mood, when local residents turned out in large numbers to cheer departing and returning servicemen. Later that fall, the influenza epidemic forced the city to close schools, theaters, and many public gatherings, so the parade-filled spring and summer of 1918 became a memory of a city united around the war effort.
