The Johnstown Flood of May 31, 1889, followed the collapse of the South Fork Dam, which had been built to hold back a reservoir for the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club, a resort of wealthy industrialists in the mountains above the city. When the dam gave way, a wall of water rushed down the Little Conemaugh and Conemaugh valleys, killing more than 2,200 people and sweeping through the mill town below. A newspaper sketch like this one was a common way to show such disasters before halftone photographs became routine in print, so the drawing carries the urgency and scale of a story told to readers who were still learning what had happened.
