Three portraits and scenes on one half-page of the June 4, 1887 issue of *Harper's Weekly* bring together the British statesman William Ewart Gladstone and the Irish nationalist William O'Brien, two men at the center of the Irish question that year. Gladstone had split his Liberal Party over Home Rule for Ireland, and in 1887 the fight over Irish land and self-government was reaching a sharp pitch. O'Brien was a leading figure in the Plan of Campaign, a tenant movement that withheld rents from landlords on Irish estates. The page shows how American weeklies followed these disputes, which drew wide interest among Irish communities in the United States.
