Bruce Bairnsfather, the British cartoonist born in India in 1887, is the subject of this portrait, which is credited to Pirie MacDonald, a New York photographer known for his studio portraits of men. Bairnsfather became famous during the First World War for his cartoons of Old Bill, a weary, mustachioed infantryman who appeared in British magazines and was later collected in books that sold widely. The c1918 date and the photographer's credit come from an older caption card and have not been independently verified.
