Nathaniel Currier's firm produced "The Sailor's Return" around 1847, when lithography was becoming the cheapest way for ordinary Americans to own pictures of everyday life. Hand-colored by workers who applied pigment stencil by stencil, the print belongs to the sentimental genre that Currier pursued in the 1840s, showing homecomings and domestic scenes meant to appeal to a broad middle-class public. Its catalog entry in the 1983 Gale Research raisonné places it among the firm's early output, and collectors still value such sheets for their vivid color and their glimpse of how Americans pictured family life before the photograph became common.
