Architect Stanford White appears here as a portrait subject rather than through his buildings, reproduced as a halftone at a time when that process was newly making photographs practical for magazine pages. The picture was printed in The Critic, a New York weekly devoted to literature and the arts, in 1895, when White was one of the city's most prominent designers as a partner in McKim, Mead & White. Halftone, which broke a photograph into tiny dots of varying size, was then becoming standard in periodicals. White's death in 1906 at Madison Square Garden, a building he had designed, gives the portrait added weight today.
