This engraving shows Diego Cisneros, a physician honored in its Latin title as a graduate of the University of Alcalá, whose Latin name, Complutum, gives the word "Complutensis." It appeared as an illustration in his 1618 work *Sitio, naturaleza y propriedades de la Ciudad de México*, a treatise on Mexico City's site, climate, and conditions for health. Printed portraits like this one were often used to lend authority to scholarly books, presenting the author as a learned man whose observations deserved trust. The record's attribution to the engraver Samuel Estradanus and some other details come from an older caption card and have not been independently verified.
