Namdaemun, the Great South Gate, stood at the southern edge of Seoul's walls and was one of the main entrances to the old capital. Built early in the Joseon dynasty, its two-story gatehouse was a familiar landmark for travelers and traders arriving from the south. In 1896, Korea was in a period of political upheaval, with reform efforts and rivalry among foreign powers pressing on the royal court. The caption card behind this print is old and unverified, so its date and details are worth checking against other sources.
