Few women in the 1880s had reached the upper ranks of mathematics, which makes this wood engraving of Sonia Kovalevskaia, the Russian mathematician, notable in its own right. The portrait appeared in *The Illustrated London News* in 1884, the year she was appointed to a professorship at Stockholm, a post that made her one of the first women to hold such a chair in modern Europe. Her work on the rotation of rigid bodies, which won a prize from the French Academy of Sciences in 1888, brought her wide recognition. The engraving records her standing at a moment when the wider press was beginning to take notice of women in science.
