Oliver Hazard Perry's flagship, the *Niagara*, carried the American squadron to victory over the British on Lake Erie in September 1813, and this view shows a replica of that vessel rather than the original. The replica was built in Erie, Pennsylvania, for the battle's centennial in 1913 and toured the Great Lakes as a floating memorial to the engagement. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued thousands of views of American sites in the early twentieth century, made the glass-plate negative. Its presence on a Niagara Falls board reflects how closely the lake battle is tied to the Niagara frontier.
