A picture of Herbert Hoover standing with the Philadelphia Harmonica Band sets itself apart from the formal portraits usually made of a president. The image dates to July 2, 1929, early in Hoover's first summer in office after his March inauguration. It comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded much of the capital's public life in the early twentieth century. The glass negative shows streaks and blemishes from the slow breakdown of its original coating, which is part of what makes the plate worth examining closely.
