Taken on July 12, 1929, this glass negative shows Herbert Hoover in the early months of his presidency, and its title links him to the Federal Farm Board. Congress had created the board that June through the Agricultural Marketing Act, which Hoover signed, to steer federal support toward cooperative marketing and to steady farm prices that had sagged through the 1920s. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio whose large collection documents officials and events of the period. The glass shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, which is worth keeping in mind when judging fine detail.
