According to its title, this picture shows Herbert Hoover at the 1929 World Series in Philadelphia, where the Athletics played the Chicago Cubs at Shibe Park. Hoover had taken office earlier that year, so his presence drew attention from the press. The negative comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial news photography firm that documented Washington and national events in the early twentieth century. Viewers should notice the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which result from deterioration of the original coating rather than from the scene itself.
