Few presidents were as closely tied to the opening of the baseball season as Herbert Hoover, and this glass negative, dated April 17, 1929, captures one such occasion. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the capital for decades, made the image on a 4 by 5 inch plate. Hoover had taken office only weeks earlier, and presidents had been throwing out the first ball at Washington games since William Howard Taft did so in 1910. The record notes streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coating, which are worth keeping in mind when judging the image's fine detail.
