Hoover is the figure named in this 1929 glass negative, which was made at an opening game on April 17, a few weeks after he took office as the 31st president. Presidents had long attended Washington's opening-day baseball, a custom that began when William Howard Taft threw out the first ball in 1910. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the capital's public life, made the image. The plate shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of its original coating, which are worth noticing when judging its age and condition.
