Dated April 17, 1929, this glass negative captures President Herbert Hoover at an opening game, most likely a baseball season opener in Washington. Hoover had taken office only weeks earlier, on March 4, 1929, so his appearance at a public occasion like this was one of the early events of his presidency. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio, produced many pictures of officials and civic events during this period. The negative shows streaks and surface blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, which affects fine detail.
