Taken on April 17, 1929, this glass negative shows Herbert Hoover at the opening game of the baseball season, about six weeks after he took office as president. Presidents had attended Washington's opening day since William Howard Taft threw out the first pitch in 1910, so the event was as much a civic ritual as a sporting one. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio working in the capital, made the plate, which entered the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift. Streaks and blemishes across the surface come from deterioration of the original coatings, a common condition in glass negatives of this age.
