Hoover is shown at the opening game of the 1929 baseball season, played on April 17, only about six weeks after he took office as the 31st president. Presidents have traditionally attended the first game of the season in Washington, and the early date and the new administration gave the occasion a sense of civic ceremony. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city's officials, events and streets in the late 1920s and 1930s. Its 4 by 5 inch glass negative also shows the streaks and blemishes that come with age, which are part of the object's physical history.
