A sitting president posing with a college football squad is an unusual subject, and this November 1929 view shows Herbert Hoover with the Duquesne University team from Pittsburgh. Hoover had taken office only eight months earlier, in March 1929. Duquesne, founded in 1878 as a Catholic school, fielded football teams in that era. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded officials and public occasions. Its glass negative shows the streaks and blemishes that typically develop as the original coatings deteriorate.
