Hoover posed with the University of Pittsburgh football team on October 3, 1929, about seven months into his presidency. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded officials and public events in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative, and the title comes from the company's own notes, which have not been independently verified. Photographs of presidents with athletic teams were a common part of press coverage in that era, and this one dates to just weeks before the stock market crash that October. The plate shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, a common condition in negatives of this age.
