Herbert Hoover, in his first year as president, is pictured with members of the University of California football team on October 16, 1929. The photograph reflects Hoover's ties to the West Coast: he spent much of his youth in Oregon and California and graduated from Stanford, so a meeting with a Berkeley squad carried some personal warmth beyond routine protocol. The image comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented public life in the capital in the early twentieth century. Its glass negatives often show streaks or surface wear from age, which are worth keeping in mind when studying the picture.
