Hoover posed with the University of California football team on October 16, 1929, about seven months into his presidency, which sets this glass negative apart from other images of him with visiting groups. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that recorded officials, visitors, and public events in the early twentieth century, made the exposure on glass, a format that holds fine detail but is fragile over time.
