The Georgetown Loop, a railroad line that doubles back over itself through a steep mountain valley west of Denver, is the subject here. The line was built in the mid-1880s to link the silver-mining town of Georgetown with Silver Plume, and its loops and trestles let trains gain elevation on grades too steep to climb directly. This photochrom print, one of the Detroit Publishing Company's color views from about 1899, shows the track curving across bridges that likely span Clear Creek. The process hand-tinted a photographic negative with color stones, giving the scene the bright, painterly look that made such views popular with tourists and armchair travelers of the period.
