Few views in this set of color photochroms capture the Colorado River country quite like this one, which looks up at the sheer rock walls known as the Citadel, in the Grand Canyon of the Colorado in Utah. The Detroit Publishing Company produced these hand-tinted-look photochroms around 1900, using a lithographic process that layered several stone impressions to give the rock its warm reds and ochres. The inclusion of the railroad in the subject list points to the era's tourist trade, when travelers reached the canyon country by rail and then viewed its scenery from the river and rim.
