The Rio Las Animas, a river that runs through the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, cuts a deep gorge here, and this color photochrom captures its rock walls as the Denver & Rio Grande line was carving a route along them. Photochrom was a process that layered hand-applied color over a photographic base, and the Detroit Publishing Company used it to sell scenic views of the American West to tourists and armchair travelers around 1900. Railroads like the Denver & Rio Grande made canyons such as this one accessible, so the print doubles as a record of how the rail lines turned remote wilderness into a destination.
