Here a horse-drawn stagecoach and an early steam railroad train meet on the same ground, a pairing that suggests the moment when overland travel gave way to the rails. The picture is a photomechanical reproduction of a color drawing by Stanley M. Arthurs, an illustrator who worked for magazines in the early twentieth century, and it dates from around the 1900s, long after the period it depicts. Its catalog subjects place the scene in the 1830s through 1850s, when railroads were first spreading across the United States and competing with the stagecoach lines that had carried mail and passengers between towns. The title, "The meeting of the ways," points to that crossing of old and new transportation.
