Sold under the title *The danger signal*, this 1884 color lithograph comes from the New York firm of Currier & Ives, which by then was turning out large numbers of railroad scenes for a mass market. The 1880s were a period of rapid rail expansion across the country, and a signal that warned of hazard on the track was a subject people knew well from daily life. The print was made with oil colors, so its bright tones were applied through the printing process rather than by hand. Its place in the firm's railroad output makes it a useful example of how Currier & Ives shaped popular ideas of the train.
