Few named locomotives on the New York Central carried as much meaning as the COMMODORE VANDERBILT, which honored Cornelius Vanderbilt, the shipping and railroad magnate known as "the Commodore." In the 1860s he pulled several lines together into the New York Central system, and naming an engine for him signaled the family's pride in the road. The card for this print gives no date, and its subject tags, including a Clinton and a Vanderbilt born in 1843, may not match the subject, so treat them with caution. The Wittemann Collection is known for its careful railroad views, and images like this one show how the company presented its locomotives to the public.
