Grand Central Terminal's main concourse is the subject here, a space that by the 1930s had already become one of the most recognizable public interiors in the country. The terminal opened in 1913 on a site rebuilt for the New York Central Railroad, and its vast waiting room, with tall arched windows, a great clock on the information booth, and a ceiling painted with a celestial map, was designed to move large crowds with a sense of order. This photograph, made sometime between 1930 and 1950, captures that period when commuter and long-distance rail travel was at its busiest. Its record gives no photographer's name, so the scene is best read as a document of the station's everyday life.
