Grand Central Depot, the station that stood on this site before the present terminal was built, was one of the busiest rail hubs in the country when this view was made. Its large, open train shed was designed to shelter locomotives and passengers from smoke and weather, and the photograph captures the scale of that single enclosed space with its arched roof and long platforms. By the late 19th century, the depot was handling a rapidly growing volume of commuter and long-distance traffic into Manhattan, which made it a symbol of the city's expansion. The building was later replaced by the terminal that still stands today, so images like this one now record a station that no longer exists in this form.
