Just west of the White House stands the granite bulk of the State, War and Navy Building, shown here as it looked in 1891. Architect Alfred B. Mullett's Second Empire design, finished in 1888 after nearly two decades of construction, gave three departments a single home and made it one of the largest office buildings in the country at the time. Stereo cards like this one, issued by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, were viewed through a stereoscope to create a three-dimensional effect. The building now bears the name of Dwight D. Eisenhower.
