This stereograph shows the inside of Castle Pinckney, a small brick fort on an island in Charleston Harbor that was built in the early 1800s and later became a military prison during the Civil War. The 1865 date places the scene in the final months of the war, when Charleston was evacuated and Union forces took control of the city. E. & H.T. Anthony, a New York firm that was among the largest publishers of war photography, issued the pair of images. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two side-by-side plates gave the viewer a sense of depth and of standing inside the fort.
