Before it took its benefactor's name, the institution shown here was the University at Lewisburg, a Baptist-founded school chartered in 1846 in the river town of Lewisburg, Union County. It was renamed Bucknell University in 1886, after William Bucknell, a Philadelphia businessman whose gifts supported the school. Lewisburg sits along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, and views like this one show how the campus related to the valley and the town below.
