Erie, Pennsylvania, seen from the rise known as Federal Hill, gives a view of a lakefront city that grew up around its harbor on Lake Erie. Federal Hill was a natural vantage point over the town, and from it a viewer can take in the street grid, the roofs and the water beyond. Erie's position on the lake made it a shipping and industrial center in the nineteenth century, and views like this one show how closely the city's streets and docks were tied to the shoreline.
