This 1825 lottery ticket, issued under the State of Pennsylvania, shows how the public helped pay for the Union Canal, a waterway planned to connect the Schuylkill and Susquehanna rivers across the state's interior. In the 1820s, many states authorized lotteries to raise money for roads, bridges and canals when private investors were reluctant to fund large projects, and tickets like this one let ordinary residents buy a chance at a prize while supporting public works. The Union Canal was chartered in 1811 and was completed around 1828, becoming part of a larger network that moved coal, iron and farm goods. The ticket's official heading makes clear that the state itself stood behind the scheme.
