Unlike the many views of Johnstown's wrecked streets, this picture shows the source of the disaster: the South Fork Dam and the clubhouse of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club beside it. On May 31, 1889, after days of heavy rain, the dam gave way and sent a wall of water down the Conemaugh valley into Johnstown, killing more than 2,000 people. The club's wealthy members had acquired the old reservoir as a private lake, and the dam's neglected condition became a central question in the inquiries that followed.
