South Fork lies in the narrow valley of the Little Conemaugh River in Cambria County, a few miles upstream from Johnstown. Its economy rose and fell with the steel mills and coal mines that drew workers to the district and with the railroads that carried their output east. Many residents knew the borough first for the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club, whose lake was held back by an old earthen dam, and whose wealthy Pittsburgh members, including Henry Clay Frick, used it as a summer retreat. On May 31, 1889, that dam gave way after heavy rain, and the flood that followed killed more than 2,200 people in the valley below. The disaster became the defining event in local memory for generations.
