Edgehill, a residential rise above Johnstown, Pennsylvania, grew in the early twentieth century as the city's valley economy expanded around the steel industry. Cambria Steel's mills along the Conemaugh River drew workers from many parts of Europe, and the population climbed quickly as families settled the surrounding hills. Residents still measured their town by the 1889 flood, when the failure of the South Fork dam sent a wall of water down the valley and killed more than 2,000 people. The rebuilding that followed reshaped the streets below. The Johnstown Incline, opened in 1891, carried riders up a steep grade to the neighborhoods above the valley floor.
