Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in the early twentieth century was a steel and rail town wedged into the narrow valley where the Stony Creek meets the Conemaugh River. Cambria Steel's mills and the rail yards along the rivers drew workers from across Europe, and the city's population grew as they arrived. The 1889 flood, which killed more than 2,000 people after the South Fork dam failed upstream, still shaped how residents thought about their town, and rebuilding had left a city of brick and stone streets. Edgehill, the residential ridge above the valley floor, was where families who could afford to leave the smoke and flood plain built homes. A postcard view like this one would have been sent to relatives as a picture of a town that had survived its worst day and kept working.
