Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in the spring of 1889 was a mill and mining town of about 30,000 people, built around the Cambria Iron Company and the steelworks that employed much of its population along the Conemaugh River. On May 31, 1889, after heavy rain, the earthen dam at South Fork Lake gave way upstream, and a wall of water rushed down the narrow valley into the city. More than 2,000 people died, and floating debris jammed against the stone railroad bridge and caught fire, adding to the destruction. The disaster drew national attention, and the relief effort that followed, including aid led by Clara Barton, helped shape the American Red Cross. Residents rebuilt the city in the years after, but the flood remained the event by which Johnstown was known far beyond Pennsylvania.
