Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in 1889 was a mill town whose economy rested on the Cambria Iron Company and the steel works that followed, set where the Little Conemaugh and Stony Creek rivers meet. On May 31, 1889, after days of heavy rain, the earthen dam holding back the reservoir upstream in the South Fork valley gave way, and the released water rushed down the narrow valley into the town. More than 2,000 people died, and the wreckage piled against the stone railroad bridge caught fire, adding to the devastation. Relief arrived from across the country, and the American Red Cross, under Clara Barton, carried out one of its first large disaster efforts here. Residents spent the following years rebuilding homes, mills and streets.
