Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in 1889 was a mill town built along the Little Conemaugh River, where the Cambria Iron Company and its rail connections gave work to thousands. On May 31 of that year, the earthen dam holding back Lake Conemaugh, a reservoir upstream, failed after days of heavy rain, and a wall of water roared down the narrow valley into the town. The flood killed roughly 2,200 people, and debris piled against the stone railroad viaduct caught fire, adding to the destruction. Rebuilding began within weeks, and the disaster drew national attention to the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club, whose members owned the lake and the neglected dam. This view shows the valley as residents would have seen it in the flood's aftermath, with wreckage still crowding the streets and riverbanks.
